There Is So Much More

When I heard the news,
My heart fell on the floor
I was on a plane on my way to Baltimore
In these trouble times its hard enough as it is
My soul has a known a better life than this

I wonder how so many can be in so much pain,
While others don't seem to feel a thing
Then I curse my whiteness, and I get so damn depressed,
In a world with suffering,Why should I be so blessed?

I heard about a women who lives in Colorado,
She built a monument of sorts behind the garage door
Where everyday she prays for all whom are born
And all whose souls have passed on
Sometimes my trouble gets so thick
I can't see how I'm gonna get through it
but then I'd rather be stuck up in a tree
Then be tied to it

There is so much more.

I don't feel comfortable with the way my clothes fit
I cant get used to my body's limits
I got some fancy shoes to try and giggle away these blues
They cost a lot of money but they aren't worth a thing
I wanna free my feet from the broken glass and concrete
I need to get out of this city Lay upon the ground stare a hole in the sky
Wondering where I go when I die.
When I die.

Side note:
Let me first start off by saying that I will occasionally have posts similar this one. I've always enjoyed digging deeper into the meaning of songs...just a small interest I guess. Now I know that most of the songs I attempt to find the meanings of are not "Christian" genres, but I believe that great music doesn't have to be worship music, lyrics that have deep meaning and value don't have to be written by Christian artists. But I do also think that almost any song can be given a Christian meaning, which most of my interpretations will end up being.

This song, "There Is So Much More", is written by Brett Dennen, a folk/pop artist.

  • "My soul has known a better life than this" could be made to say that our lives are not supposed to feel comfortable here, what our soul longs for is Christ.
  • "A better life than this" shows that we're all sinful, and Christ offers us a meaningful and "better" life than what we all live.
  • He realizes all of the sin in the world, and doesn't see why he deserves or has any of the blessings in his life. (Romans 5:7-8)
  • When he says a "monument of sorts", he could be be meaning the things in our lives that we worship other than Christ. People dedicate themselves to things in life in which they worship or appreciate, just because they've been told to.
  • When he says "I'd rather be stuck up in a tree than be tied to it", he could be saying that he'd rather have the chance to survive than be tied to a tree with no way out. Here, I see a direct parallel to Jesus dying on the cross. He died, nailed to a tree, so we could sit freely in that tree...given a second chance.
  • When he talks about his shoes, I think its self-explanatory that he's talking about material possessions and how, in the end, it means nothing.

In this song he almost pours his heart out, telling his listeners that he's struggling in his life. In the end when he says he wants to lay on the ground and stare into space wondering where he'll go when he dies, it makes me think hes struggling with faith. I wonder if Brett knows how much of Christ is in his music?
